Disclaimer: this is a guide to how CosmicCowZine works, other zine organizers do things differently. As always, if you have any questions feel free to ask mod mochosum.
ARTISTS are assigned specific page types: ad, interview page, tip-guide pages, and quiz spreads. Assigned roles are chosen based on the person's style, strengths, available work time, and specific page slots available (example: if an artist says they are free to work on multiple pages, they'll most likely be assigned to an interview. Or if an artist does full illustrations with detailed backgrounds, they are most likely assigned to do an ad). Artists to pitch themes/ideas for the mod to greenlight.
GRAPHIC DESIGNERS are assigned specific roles based on the person's style/strength: ad logo/branding, or quiz layout graphics, or interview layout graphics, or tip-guide layout graphics. Graphic designers do not need to claim any themes/ideas. Just wait until the artists have their theme greenlit and then DM them to discuss next steps such as layout or branding ideas. Work together with the artist to come to a decision on what you both think is best for the piece.
WRITERS are given various roles that are as equal as possible throughout the writing team (ex: all writers get 5-6 pieces to write about). The type of pages a writer is in charge of are: interview page, tip-guide pages, and quiz spreads. It sounds like a lot of work per person, but most of the writing is shared with the artist's image, so it's not that lengthy. Quizzes and tip-guides are generally really easy to complete.
All merch will be assigned to specific artists/graphic designers based on their style/strengths! Merch duties are an additional duty to the zine page the contributor is doing. Generally, the mod checks a contributor's noted available time as submitted on the "terms/condition" form and gives them a smaller role on the zine page to accomodate for the added merch role. It's all about balancing the needs of the project and the needs of the contributors.
IMPORTANT: Please note that contributors assigned to merch duties, are free to say they don't have the time for it and are unable to take on the role. In which case, the mod planned ahead and has a second choice.
A small percentage of the pages are pre-assigned. A large majority of the zine is open with no specific themes/ideas tied to it.
Q: What are pre-assigned themes?
A: Some artists will be assigned to specific themes/ideas for their page. This means that it is highly suggested by the mod. By all means, it is not mandatory to stick to. If you've been assigned a theme but you've got another idea you really want to do, then give the mod another idea to greenlight during the "Greenlight/Claiming Ideas" session.
Q: Why pre-assign some of them?
A: The mod envisions the zine, and at times, upon accepting certain applicants, there's a lightbulb moment. It starts when the mod looks at artists' portfolio and a specific artist stands out for a certain element in their style and it is spot on for a certain theme (ex: an artist is really skilled at doing intricate makeup looks on the characters they draw, so the artist will be pre-assigned to do a makeup ad or a how-to-do-makeup guide). Specific themes can run out fast. And to ensure that specific artists with strong tendencies toward that style or elements of the theme can do it, it's pre-assigned.
IMPORTANT: Please note, this does not mean that if another artist is pre-assigned a theme (ex: makeup), then nobody else can do that theme too. While the zine can't have like 10 makeup ads, there can be 2-3 other similar themes as long as there's a tweak that makes each unique (ex: glitter makeup, vegan makeup, waterproof makeup, etc.).
